Snow White & Elsa

Introduction:

With Snow White being frozen by Elsa, it summarizes the development of the princess image in the past several decades. As a factory where the world’s most famous princesses are produced, Disney has witnessed and took part in the process of how the society defines a perfect princess. And the standard has shifted from a princess of beauty and innocence who needs to be saved to a princess who is adventurous, who breaks traditions and has independent thoughts, and finally to a princess who fights for happiness, who takes control and who are even stronger than males as it is in the 21th Century. This situation is not an exception and it does not just happen in cartoon field. The princess images in live action films also agrees with this pattern. And this pattern comes for a reason——it is the epitome of feminist movement, especially in the US. The constantly improving process of princess images actually stands for the transition of women’s status in society; it symbolizes the emancipation of women. Feminist movement fights against sexism; it aims to campaign equal rights for women, to help them have the same social status as men, and to choose their lifestyle according to their own free will. However, the movement is not only about gender, but also relates to race, politics and etc. In order to achieve the quality between male and female, the discrimination against women, the old traditions used to bound women, and the conventional must all be eliminated.
